Anthracite

Our key competitive advantage is the high quality and environmental friendliness of our products, as they reduce the impact on the environment when used in metal production.

High Quality Anthracite

Anthracite is used as an effective substitute for metallurgical coke. Its environmental friendliness can be attributed to two key factors:

  1. Mining anthracite using the open-pit method, as we do at our facilities, generates four times less greenhouse gas in CO2 equivalent than extracting coking coals, which are predominantly mined underground. Underground mining produces a significant amount of methane – a greenhouse gas more harmful than CO2. Over a 100-year period, methane’s global warming potential (greenhouse effect) is 25 times greater than that of CO2.
  2. The use of anthracite for pig iron smelting does not require coking – a process that produces substantial volumes of greenhouse gases and other harmful substances. During the coking of bituminous coals, coke oven gas is produced that contains up to 62% hydrogen and up to 25% methane.
75%
of the Sibanthracite Group’s products are used in metallurgical production
4-7%
of all CO2 emissions worldwide are released due to metallurgical production

How Anthracite Reduces the Carbon Footprint in Metallurgy:

  • greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by up to 40% when metallurgical coke is replaced by anthracite
  • four times less greenhouse gas is generated by open-pit anthracite mining than underground coking coal extraction

The Sibanthracite Group makes a significant contribution to reducing the environmental impact of the metallurgical industry by supplying high-quality anthracite and PCI products, as using these in blast furnace pig iron smelting results in significantly less CO₂ emissions than metallurgical coke.

Replacing one million tonnes of metallurgical coke with one million tonnes of anthracite makes it possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across the entire production chain – from coal mining to pig iron smelting – by 20% to 40%, or by 0.4 to 0.8 million tonnes in CO2 equivalent.

Our key competitive advantage is the high quality and environmental friendliness of our products, as they reduce the impact on the environment when used in metal production.
